The Kentucky Derby, Info and links

If it is Kentucky in the spring, then it is all about the Kentucky Derby. This post is a mix of this and that, all related to the Kentucky Derby. I hope you enjoy.

This year's Kentucky Derby poster... available here

Every shop you go in from Louisville to Lexington will be stocked with everything Derby...flags, door decor, serveware, hostess gifts, etc. There is no shortage on ways to spend your money!

I discovered the Kentucky Derby Festival App. Who knew?

You all know that I have become an Instagram junkie of late. And I like to share things with you that catch my attention. The Kentucky Derby on Instagram here.

Also...with Kentucky being front and center so is Kentucky bourbon. There are tours, merchandise, and recipes for you to check out.

And be sure to learn how to make your own mint syrup for your mint julep.
Directions
  1. Combine water, sugar and chopped mint leaves in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat until the sugar is completely dissolved. ...
  2. Fill eight cups or frozen goblets with crushed ice and pour 4 ounces of bourbon and 1/4 cup mint syrup in each.

I love this new Kentucky painting of the Derby.

As for a Derby hat...the bigger the better, right?

With pink being my color this spring I would wear this hat and dress in a heartbeat. I think both would work for a lady of a certain age. :-)

I ran across an article, Bourbon for the Belles, in Southern Living Magazine that listed some great places to visit if you are in Lexington.... Here is just a sampling.

  1. Four ounces of bourbon per drink?! That's three or four drinks in one glass. Don't try this at home, folks!

  2. Sheila,
I had the good fortune of visiting Louisville one year on a business trip. Several of us toured Churchill Downs when there were no races going on and only a few horses on the grounds. Yet, it was fascinating.

  3. What a fun post! My daughter always did (in the past) a Kentucky Derby party here (WI) and it was always a lot of fun---hats and dress up-cocktails and lots of food. I think she needs to do that again! xo Diana

  4. You would look lovely in the hat and dress. Surely you and your husband could find an event to wear this. After making billions of bourbon balls, you deserve a new outfit...ha! I toured Churchill Downs years ago (pre-k...pre-kids) but never attended the race. It would be fun to go just for the people watching alone.
