She Who Plays With Dishes

I am "she" who plays with dishes!

China, porcelain, ironstone, pottery...
I love all of it.

Get comfortable...lots of photos in this post. :-)

I try to clean and dust my many dishes, pieces of ironstone, and pottery during the winter. It is cold outside and I need something to do inside after I put away the Christmas decorations.

(There is always the regular cleaning, but I just don't find regular house cleaning fun.😊)

Washing my pretty dishes...that is a different story. It is kind of like being a little girl and playing with dishes again...except that they are not plastic or metal.

Since we are starting a new year, and it is a time for renewal and projects, and cleaning and straightening our nests, I like to take care of my pretty dishes. I like to admire them and take inventory.

My dishes and pieces of pottery fall into a couple of color categories. White, or blue and white. ha! Today we will play with blue and white.

As far as pedigree, there is a mix. Some are inexpensive pieces from here and there. My blue and white transferware pieces, well, they are a little more special.

I use my collection for food as well as for decorating. Whatever moves me! I mix pedigree with mutts. If I like what I see...I will use it together.

I love love love ironstone pitches and tureens. If I had the budget I could see some heavy duty collecting!  My love of ironstone began with an old English pitcher that a friend gave me for helping her move.

Here are a few plates and platters from over the years...

These jars have been collected over the years also. When you have been married for four decades you have time to collect.

Only purchase what you love, and you will not tire of it. If there is no emotional connection it will just be a dust catcher or end up in a box in the basement. :-)

I use all of my pieces.

You all have probably seen many of these pieces in vignettes before. I use and reuse. I decorate and redecorate using the same pieces in different ways around the house.

I hope you do not tire of seeing me repeat pieces. I like to show that you can get completely different looks with the same pieces...used in different places around your home.

It's about mixing and matching what you have, what you love.

Your collection may be something different from mine, but you can still achieve different looks by being creative.

I bought this plate because of the small dog. It reminded me of our golden.

Collected jars used together make a vignette.
If you have a collection and what to make a bold statement, display all of them together for a statement!

I made this collage of blue and white for my Facebook header.

My old wedding china. I loved blue and white back in 1973!  We chose it from a small local jewelry store and while it does not have a grand pedigree, I still love it as much today as I did then.

I picked up these RL salad plates to mix and match with all my dishes. I have used them on top of inexpensive white plates as well as my wedding china.

You can see that I just mix and move my pieces all over the place.

And a few more pieces... ready for hot soapy water. No dishwasher for my special pieces.

Blue and white seems to go with any color you put with it. Look at the yellow above! I have used Christmas red with my blue and white and that is a gorgeous look. I have also used some orange. Another bold look.

And look at simple white with the blue and white transferware. Elegant simplicity. No wonder the English loved to import it and use around their homes.

I got lucky at Tuesday Morning one day and found this blue and white lamp for a song. It was calling my name!  :-)

  3. You have a wonderful, wonderful collection. Something possessed me and I gave my rather large blue and white collection to my daughter...and I think she has it stored because I haven't seen it. I have loved blue and white since I was about 7 years old and got a Blue Willow tea set. It was $3. a lot for a farm kid to spend on a 'toy' but I loved it...sure wish I had it now.

You display your collections beautifully. This is a fun post- xo Diana

  4. My goodness...you do have a fine collection here. And all the pieces are so...elegant...classy...luscious...I have a few pieces of blue and white but mine all seem so....country, compared to your nice pieces..if I only lived next door and you could teach me about buying, it would be great...and we could make coffee and have orange and cranberry muffins, dripping with butter..and after we finished, you could show me how to make a pretty winter wreath...I sure could learn a lot from you...xoxo
