A Seasonal Change

Thank you to At Home With Jemma for featuring this post.

Welcome to the blog today!

It seems like when August 1 rolls around my brain switches to a transition period.

It's like summer is over (which it isn't) and my brain wants to begin thinking about fall colors...and cooler temperatures.

I am not really sure if this is a post about my making a new sunflower arrangement in a blue and white jar, or if it is more of a photography post.

I'll let you decide.

I picked up about a dozen sunflower stems and though I would copy what I saw on someone else's blog. I cannot remember whose blog. Sorry.

I was going to put my stems in an ironstone pitcher, but at the last minute wanted to try my large oriental jar. I have never put sunflowers in it for some reason.

Sunflower yellow always makes me think of the south of France, Provence, where I lived for a bit.

I was a French major in college and grad-school, then went on to teach high school French, and later college French. (That's why French this and that finds its way onto the blog.)

Sunflowers are such architectural flowers. They make a statement without doing much to them except for placing them in a container.

cropped for interest

I like to crop photos and see if I can create an art print sort of look. Sometimes I will take a less than perfect pic and crop it to make it pretty.

In the pictures above and below I played with photo editing. I created a color focal point...with the rest of the picture in black and white.

I went close up and did macro shots for the pics above and below. I think they look kind of artsy.

It is too early to say "happy fall" so I will just wish you a happy August!

Have you started to think about fall?

What triggers you to begin? School. Cooler temps. Mums. Football. Please share. :-)

My Kentucky Living

Hello, I'm Sheila and my house is a giant art project! I enjoy creating an environment where my family can feel safe, secure, and loved. We are empty nesters learning to slow down and enjoy life.

  1. Sheila, beautiful photos of sunflowers! Funny that we both are in a Provencal kind of mood! Wishing you a great afternoon!

    1. Thank you Pam! And what is not to like about a Provencal kind of day! Thanks for visiting. :-)

  2. August is a hard month for decorating for sure. I think your sunflowers in the blue say "late summer." Really pretty!!! Great photography too.

I learned my lesson last year about putting fall out too early. I am going to keep summer going until September and then the first of September I am going to imitate something I saw on a blog. For the first part of September I am going to add a few things for back to school with apples as my guide. Then fall will come out in late September.

    1. I know what you mean about starting fall decorating too early. I get tired of it. ha! Yes...I am waiting before I go full out fall. However, I did see a couple of leaves fall off of a tree yesterday. Ugggg. I am not ready for that. ha.

  3. I HAVE been thinking about Fall too as it is my favorite season to decorate for. I also have bought a couple of things:) Your sunflowers are so pretty!!! I should pick some up! My neighbor has about 10 or 13 of them blooming from the seeds that the birds dropped. One is HUGE!

    1. I should plant some sunflowers! I love them so much this time of the year. And sweet brown eyed susans. I know your fall displays will be they always are.

  4. I love sunflowers, and have been looking for faux ones, since I never seem to be able to grow them. What you're doing with cropping is what I've been telling bloggers for years! You can make 3-5 photos out of 1!

  5. Hi Sheila! Well, girlfriend, you win the prize for both - making a sunflower arrangement and for photography! I love this and it's amazing how easy just poking the stems in your pretty jar makes a lovely sight.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia :)

    1. are so sweet! I love easy arrangements, as I am not a florist by any stretch of the imagination. Yes...I love to poke stems! Thank!

  6. Like the way you are transitioning into fall decor. Sunflowers are fabulous! I need to cut ours so the chickens can have the seeds. The shadows are getting longer which indicates a shift in the season. Right now we are dealing with hot, hot, hot days.

    1. I envy your sunflowers. I said above that I need to plant some in my yard. Maybe next year. :-)

  7. August makes me start thinking of Fall, too, but it's still a hot month here in Missouri. We hope to be in the new house by the middle of September so no Fall decor around here this year. I'll have enjoy the lovely posts in blog land. Love the sunflowers with the blue jar. Yellow and blue are a favorite color combination.

  8. Great sunflowers - and great photos!! My mind has been heading towards fall as well - our nights are so lovely and cool in August, it's hard not to think of the months ahead. And I can cook indoors again, which I've been doing plenty of!

  9. The sunflowers are very pretty in the blue vast - that's how I like them. Happy Fall? Noooooooo! It's still much too early and there's lots of summer left to enjoy!

  10. Happy August to you as well. I refuse to think fall yet! I love sunflowers and how you captured them in the photos are lovely!

  11. I absolutely love this arrangement. I think the bright yellow with the blue and white is a wonderful combination. I also loved the why you photography them I think you really get a feel for the texture of the petals. Great job

  12. Sheila, I brought home three bunches of sunflowers today. I put half of them in a large ironstone pitcher and the others in a tall red vase that is on a table on the terrace. I may buy more and use them in a blue and white vase. '-)

  13. Sunflowers are my favorite. They are so bright and cheerful. Thank you so much for linking up at Dishing it and Digging it link party. We love having you.

  14. Pretty. I'm craving fall. We are in a massive heat wave here!

  15. Sunflowers to me are the symbol of the end of the summer. They are also my granddaughters favorite flower for the garden. Thank you so much for linking at #overthemoon! I look forward to seeing what you share every week. Please come back for #WonderfulWednesday or #ThursdayFavoriteThings.
