Fall Shopping Alert

Just a quick visit with you today...

I am sharing this because you may want to go shopping after I show you this picture.

Normally my posts are long and loaded with photos. Today...not so much. :-)

This is a shopping alert!

1st Shopping Alert:

I located these gorgeous round placemats for $2.00 each at Dollar General.

The placemats are available in three colors: straw, dark teal, and this lovely shade of dark coral blended into autumn rust. A gorgeous shade. (They look the same as the ones at a popular import store.)

2nd Shopping Alert:

I saw these cute little candle mini wreath things at Hobby Lobby last week. 40% off folks!

What you see above is the beginning of a tablescape...that you will see another time. :-) Stay tuned.

I am prepping for some fall and harvest blog tours in which I have been invited to participate.

It will be so much fun to see so many great ideas from so many talented bloggers! Yes it will. More details on that later.

Sorry, this was such a quick visit. I just thought you all might want to know about the placemats and candle decorations before they are all gone.

More later...

Fall Floral Projects

I have been busy, busy playing with my fall floral. I decided it was time to change out my summer front door wreath.

The time came to add some fall floral. I have been itching to do this but did not want to jump the seasons.

I went to the basement to gather some stems and containers and took them to the back porch to begin the process.

I have two of these metal door containers that I brought from the previous house.

The flowers in them are actually huge floral bushes that I bought at HL a few years ago.

(Yes. I am a hoarder. I keep things in my stash and reuse them as the seasons roll around.)

I don't have double doors now, so I though I would change up the containers. In comes my wonderful door basket that my daughter picked up for me in Lexington a couple of years ago.

Don't be shy with color

Welcome to the blog today. I am playing with a table setting...

I wanted to see if I could put a twist on a table setting. A fall twist. Not full blown fall you see, but a nod to fall.

Instead of using white or navy linen napkins I wanted to try my olive green napkins. You all know that I just love greens.

I had an idea of using my blue and white accessories but popping them with a fall-ish shade of green.

Simple Fall Trayscape

Another look at my tray...

Last weekend I picked up a new tray at TJ Maxx...and I wrote a post about how versatile I thought it would be for seasonal and holiday decorating. See..."Another Tray" post here.

This is the the tray as I found it.

This is the tray after I placed an arrangement on it...I had to tinker after I brought the tray home. :-)

And here is what I did to it yesterday!

I have been wanting to make a "nod to fall" arrangement and this is what I did...and on the new tray.

I gathered some older accessories along with some pine cones and created a fallish trayscape.

The small brass container is a golden oldie from the past that once had a very pretty flower arrangement in it.

The goldish candlesticks are from my stash of old stuff too. I pulled them out and created an quick fall trayscape.

Use and reuse are my motto! Use what you have...in a new way. Mix and match. You get the idea! :-)

I thought the tray needed some color, so out comes a greenery ball (love those things!) and a tiny faux pumpkin.

This tray is huge and can handle several things.

This is just the beginning of my playing with my new toy. ha! I may challenge myself to see just how many ways I can decorate it.

I hope I don't wear you out with my new tray...but right now I am so excited with the many possibilities.

Stay tuned for As The Tray Turns!

This Time Last Year

I know that it is always best to look ahead, but for once I thought I would look back, back to last August.

I was looking through some of my photos from this time last year and thought I would share with you. This will be a refresher story for some of you.

I have so many new readers (for which I am very thankful)  that I thought it would be a good idea to include the pics in a recap. Plus, I look back at my older photos as a way to re-evaluate what I have done in the house...and what needs to be done.

The downsizing process, along with re-purposing things, seems to go on forever! Of course...it could just be me. :-)

This time last year I was about to host my parents 65th anniversary party. I had been fixing up this and that so that the house would look nice. (They are about to celebrate their 66th in a few days.)

My mums were on a timeline and I was hoping that they would bloom by August 28th! (They did.)

I fixed a couple of arrangements with some silk stems that I had in my stash.

I worked all summer misting and watering my ferns so that they would be pretty for the party.

The largest part of pre-party planning, besides the food, was recovering six chairs. All of the chairs were close to 20 years old...and needing to be freshened up some. Well, really they were overdue. :-)

I was wanting a bit of a RL look in the great room with the over sized paisley fabric above.

And I was going for "traditional with a twist" look on the two chairs below.

I have two matching wing chairs that flank the entry to the parlor...that I covered in a very traditional sort of damask design on white cotton. I wanted all white to go with my older white sofa.

With having all white furniture in the parlor I can switch out pillows and accessories so much easier than before. Since this is a room that sees light duty the white works just fine.

I am still happy about my selections...but I continue to mix and match pillows and accessories around the house to keep things fresh.

While my chairs are old...they are really well built. It is hard to decide between purchasing new and recovering old...but in the case of these chairs, recovering was a good decision.

Now... I  need to get busy thinking about what I want to do for fall 2016. I am procrastinating.

I like to reuse my accessories in new ways. So, stay tuned to see what I come up with next. :-)

Another tray

I picked up a new tray this weekend.

I was doing a walk through TJ Maxx with hubby in tow. I looked at this and that...but this metal tray decided to come home with me.

I asked hubby what he thought about it, while it was in the cart. His remark was...well,"it is unusual." I could see great possibilities! Yes, great possibilities!

I have big plans for this tray. I am imagining arrangements for fall, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. I love to find something that I can use all year long.

The center of the tray is a mirror...with the vine and twig outer design in cast metal, with a gold finish.

I can see it as a great bar tray or a surface to hold multiple fat candles. Like I said...I see great possibilities for this tray. Watch for it to appear over the next few months.

To get a quick idea of what I might be able to do I put my tray on the dining room table. I wanted to get a feel for its size, etc. (It is about 18 inches across and very heavy.)

I am thinking pine cones, candles, pine branches, etc will find their way to this tray as part of a fall centerpiece.

The color of the tray seems to blend well with brass.

I know that some of you do not want brass ever again...but I have old pieces and have been bringing them out to use again. I believe "gold" tones are "in" today...and maybe not brass. But hey...they look almost the same. Works for me anyway.

To experiment, I picked up a brass bowl with grass from the great room just to see what it might look like on the tray.

You never know how something will look until you give it a try.

In a flash, just like that, I have a table arrangement. I am not sure how long this particular arrangement will last because I am itching to make a transition to fall centerpiece.

I do not want to rush summer's ending...but I am thinking and planning some fall décor. Just a little bit.

I am not ready for the leaves to turn and begin to fall. No...not yet.

I was in HL a couple of weeks ago and there were Christmas trees out on the floor. I understand that craft people need their supplies and such...but Christmas trees in August caught me by surprise. ha!

What kind of ideas do you have for my large tray? I know you all are very creative...so I would appreciate any suggestions to try.

Vignettes Here There & Everywhere

Vignettes...I have them all over my house!

They are constantly moving and being recreated.

I have quite the collection of bowls, plates, trays, and baskets that I use over and over.

The vignette on the top of my black chest was created by using matching lamps and a large brass bowl. I inserted faux grass bundles from HL to create a full arrangement.

And here is an alternate vignette I made for the black painted chest.

This one is a tray vignette I make for the kitchen table back in the spring. I love to bring shades of green into the house décor all year long.

Sometimes a table vignette can be as simple as a platter full of pretty fruit!

This is one of my favorite kitchen table vignettes. I began with a linen table runner...then began adding some of my favorite things.

I mix and remix the ingredients into new vignettes from season to season and from bowl to bowl.

I use lots of faux ingredients...that make colorful arrangements. Sometimes I use real fruit and flowers, but sometimes not.

I approach the creation of my vignettes as if I were making a layout for a still life painting. I consider color, scale, and a triangular layout. It has to look just right to my eye...or I keep tinkering with it.

An attractive vignette can be created with a few precious pieces or a casual mix of bowls and and filler.

Mix and match according to what looks right to you.

My vignettes change often...sometimes when I dust. I just get the idea to try something different.

And then again, sometimes I just have a single container filled with fluff and stuff. And that works too!

I love to make centerpieces and table vignettes and wanted to share some that I have made. I am always tinkering around the house you know. :-)
