Summer Fluffing in the Great Room

I hope every one had a nice 4th of July.

I am back in the great room today...doing a little fluffing.

pillows, candlesticks, centerpiece

Summer decorating tends to be simple.
Light colors. Less fuss.

I have a dark room in my house that vexes me.
The great room is a large room, and I like it...except for the dark created by the porch roof. I know that I should not fuss about it...and you have heard me whine about it before. ha!

In the summer months I like to try to lighten up the room by adding light colored pillows on the sofa.

I think that adding green also helps my dark room feel fresh. The boxwood balls are sitting on a Beatriz Ball platter.

The aluminum candlesticks and platter help to reflect light...and more light is better in my book. At least in this room!

This simple summer fluffing makes me feel better. Sometimes just a few little tweaks in a room can change the mood/feel. It's worth the time to work on a room if it helps you to feel more comfortable in it.

What have you been doing to fluff your house this summer?Changing out pillows? or Curtains and bedspreads? Or maybe painting a room?

Thanks for visiting.

Hello, I'm Sheila and my house is a giant art project! I enjoy creating an environment where my family can feel safe, secure, and loved. We are empty nesters learning to slow down and enjoy life.

  1. I like those candlesticks! I tend to add fresh flowers and change my pillows. That's about it! Glad your 4th was a good one. Linda

  2. I am with you... I luv light and bright. I have
swapped out the cushions to light coloured ones, the bed cover to a light cream and are in the process of brightening p the kitchen with crisp white paint. it has been a busy few months over here 😀
    luv the scripted pillow .
    hugs, Gee

  3. I am finally back from two coasts, and I am resting, doing laundry, and fluffing too!

  4. Hello my dear Sheila - yes I have been"tweaking" As a matter of fact I have just finished painting a small bathroom. I painted it in blue with accents (towels etc. in a bright yellow - it looks quite pretty - but you know what - I turned 80 in January nd found out for sure that I am not 50 anymore. As I said it as a small job but itseemed to get bigger - no more painting for me. I love your blog, ideas and home. regards from Betty Baker in Wasaga Beach Ontario,

  5. Hi Sheila! Your summer fluffing looks wonderful and perfect for the season. Our main living room is on the dark side as well - cozy and charming in the cold months, but too stuffy in the summer. I like stripping down to the minimum for the summer and adding some lighter accents too. Have a wonderful week! Jane

  6. Great fluffing!!!....Three houses ago, I had a great room that did not have a lot of natural light due to it being between a large living room and a 60X15 covered porch/sunroom.....We solved the problem by installing solar tubes...they were great!....Love your lidded wicker basket/coffee table.

  7. Porches are wonderful but they do cut off light. The solar tubes are a good idea. I like your summer changes. There are so many "coastal" style blogs out there and some of the ideas could be incorporated into traditional "land-locked" rooms. Came across a post this morning about doing a dorm room in coastal style.

  8. I love that tray your boxwood balls are in! My décor is pretty sparse these day, the house is for sale. I'm just trying to keep things clean! Ha!

  9. Looks great! I have the same challenge with lightening up our dark home for summer. Thanks for the inspiration.

  10. I like your summer changes. Our last house had a wrap around veranda, so I understand the challenge of the quest for light!

  11. Loving the boxwood and those pillows you added. You do "fluff" good!

  12. Gorgeous as always. I never get tired of looking at your decor. Thank you for sharing at #OverTheMoon. I hope to see you next week! Have a great one. Pinned and tweeted.

  13. I love, love, love the pillows! So summery!

  14. The pillows do a great job of lightening things up and boxwoods always add an element of class. Thanks for sharing again at Celebrate Your Story!

  16. Oh, I love to "fluff up" my rooms all the time. Right now it is more like I am still trying out things to see what I like best. I have been moving area rugs around this summer!

  17. Our great room is darkish most of the day and I too have to figure out ways to brighten and lighten it.
Great tips on how to go about doing just that!
Great to have you share these decorating tips with us at TOHOT!
