DIY Tutorial: Make Headers

Whether you have a blog, or just want to create headers for a collage, or project page, etc. Canva is a very easy program to use.

Take a look at a few that I have made in Canva.

I will show you how I make my headers and then you can create your own.

First take a look at some headers I have created. I will have the tutorial after my examples.

I used bits and pieces of design features to make original styles.

For this black header I began by choosing a custom size. I typed in 1000 x 300 as that is the size opening for my blog.
I chose a black background.
I chose a Greek key line...and enlarged it and changed it to blue.
I created a white rectangle from shapes, and inserted a blue border.
Lastly, I added text to the white rectangle and under the rectangle.

This pineapple header is one of my early designs.
I created a custom size, 1000 x 300.
Added an upload from my computer pics, the pineapple.Inserted text. Super simple.

I created my custom size.
Added a blue border.
Inserted Text.

Another one of my early header creations, but I was getting brave enough to add top and bottom Greek key borders/lines.
I began by creating my custom size.
Chose a white background.
Added a Waterlogue version of one of my own pictures.
Added text.

For this header I created my custom size first.
Then I found a chalkboard image and uploaded it to Canva so that I could import it to my header project. This is how I got the chalkboard background. Inserted text! I have though of making business cards with this look...just in a different size.

Directions...
The corresponding pics are below.
  • On your Canva page, click to Start a new design.
  • Slide the choices on the dashboard untill you see "custom."
  • Add the size you want. My header is 1000 pixels x 300 pixels.
  • Click the "background" icon on the far left side of the Canva dashboard. Choose the color you want...or white.
  • Click the "search" icon and several options will appear. I chose "borders." Click the border you want. You will probably need to resize it and maybe rotate it.
  • Add text boxes.
  • Choose the font you want.
  • Change the size of the font to the size and width you like for your header.
  • Text Spacing. Look at Letter spacing! This is a really cool feature that allows you to spread out a word's letters. I use this feature all of the time.
  • Title Adjustment within the text box...center, right, or left.
  • Save the finished version.

You can make a header with pics too. Just upload them and place them where you want by dragging them here and there.

In this last header with the pics I scooted the text boxes higher and resized the fonts, then...I imported each photo separately and dragged the corners to make all of them the same height.

There is a lot of dragging and scooting involved in creating a multiple item header...but after some practice it will be super simple for you.

With a little practice, you can make headers as simple or as elaborate as you want. The creativity is in your hands. Have fun.
