Celebrating the 4th of July

I thought I would share some of the preparations that are happening at my house for the 4th of July. (I am keeping it really simple!)

Our kids are visiting but at different times...so my idea is that we will prepare food that can be made ahead and plated whenever someone shows up! 

This is a paper plate, paper napkin, and plastic cup type of holiday for us this year!

My kitchen table started out with blue Walmart placemats and a faux fruit centerpiece. I am always switching out my centerpieces...but you all know that. ha! 

These placemats are like some I saw at a nice import store...but my Walmart ones were less than half the price. The quality is excellent. I grabbed 8 for $16. Yay! 

Since I have so many blue and white dishes these navy placemats are a good investment. I love a deal. :-)

I substituted my blue and white vase for a blue and white bowl. The red geraniums were the perfect addition.

I added a couple of flags to the vase. Now we're talking the 4th of July!

Then I had another idea to try after seeing Shirley's sugar bowl flag arrangement on Houspitality Designs a few days ago. I wanted to try it too. 

This is the sugar bowl from our 1973 wedding china. I added sand almost to the top...and inserted ten extra small flags. 

Shirley used florist foam, but I had sand...so that is what I used. I am waiting to see how long the flags stay upright in the sand. They might start falling. :-)

My flags have printing on them and I was somewhat annoyed. The printing was not especially pretty/decorative. But, Oh well. 

I then looked closer and the printing is "Made In U.S.A." 

Well, how great is that! 

The flags remind me of a pinwheel when gathered together. 

Like I said...this is a paper plate holiday at our house. I found these snappy red, white, and blue plates and napkins at Walmart. Easy for me!

No fancy cloth napkins, napkin holders, or exquisite place settings for my 4th of July meal. It will be super easy, for me, with easy clean up.

This will be a grab it as you can meal...with folks grabbing a plate and serving themselves, whenever they arrive. 

We have a small family...so our  holiday gatherings are always small. Our grand will be staying with us for a few days after we get rid of her parents. ha! 

The plotting and scheming for outings, ice cream, crafting, and going to the lake will begin as soon as we are free of parental oversight!
