DIY Tutorial: Make Headers

Whether you have a blog, or just want to create headers for a collage, or project page, etc. Canva is a very easy program to use.

Take a look at a few that I have made in Canva.

I will show you how I make my headers and then you can create your own.

First take a look at some headers I have created. I will have the tutorial after my examples.

I used bits and pieces of design features to make original styles.

For this black header I began by choosing a custom size. I typed in 1000 x 300 as that is the size opening for my blog.
I chose a black background.
I chose a Greek key line...and enlarged it and changed it to blue.
I created a white rectangle from shapes, and inserted a blue border.
Lastly, I added text to the white rectangle and under the rectangle.

This pineapple header is one of my early designs.
I created a custom size, 1000 x 300.
Added an upload from my computer pics, the pineapple.Inserted text. Super simple.

I created my custom size.
Added a blue border.
Inserted Text.

Another one of my early header creations, but I was getting brave enough to add top and bottom Greek key borders/lines.
I began by creating my custom size.
Chose a white background.
Added a Waterlogue version of one of my own pictures.
Added text.

For this header I created my custom size first.
Then I found a chalkboard image and uploaded it to Canva so that I could import it to my header project. This is how I got the chalkboard background. Inserted text! I have though of making business cards with this look...just in a different size.

Directions...
The corresponding pics are below.
  • On your Canva page, click to Start a new design.
  • Slide the choices on the dashboard untill you see "custom."
  • Add the size you want. My header is 1000 pixels x 300 pixels.
  • Click the "background" icon on the far left side of the Canva dashboard. Choose the color you want...or white.
  • Click the "search" icon and several options will appear. I chose "borders." Click the border you want. You will probably need to resize it and maybe rotate it.
  • Add text boxes.
  • Choose the font you want.
  • Change the size of the font to the size and width you like for your header.
  • Text Spacing. Look at Letter spacing! This is a really cool feature that allows you to spread out a word's letters. I use this feature all of the time.
  • Title Adjustment within the text box...center, right, or left.
  • Save the finished version.

You can make a header with pics too. Just upload them and place them where you want by dragging them here and there.

In this last header with the pics I scooted the text boxes higher and resized the fonts, then...I imported each photo separately and dragged the corners to make all of them the same height.

There is a lot of dragging and scooting involved in creating a multiple item header...but after some practice it will be super simple for you.

With a little practice, you can make headers as simple or as elaborate as you want. The creativity is in your hands. Have fun.

Up and Running Again!

Welcome to the new and improved My Kentucky Living!

One of my Canva creations

My blog fairy...Linda, works very quickly!

She has me up and running once again.

I have a cool, new, contemporary blog template to showcase my traditional style. (You know me...I love opposites, and how they compliment each other.)

Here is a quick tour of some new items on the blog that I hope you will enjoy.

You will notice social links at the very top of the page. I hope you click and join me on these social sites.

I am loving Instagram, so you will see tons of my photos there. It's a fun way to connect and chat a bit.

Next is the menu bar...with dropdowns. Click on the link title and other "pages" will appear. Just click on the one you want. I think you might enjoy the "holiday decorating" tab...where I feature Fall, Halloween, and Decorating posts. Those are always a work in progress! (Can you believe that fall is all over HL.) My recipes, Derby, and others are still there too.

Next you will notice that I have a slider bar with choices of previous blog posts. So, you can keep your eye on those in case you have missed some posts along the way.

Much of the rest of the blog is the same as before. I really liked my previous template that Linda designed...so I told her that there were several things that I wanted to keep the same.

My big request for my new template was to have a three column footer like I had on the previous template. I like to have informational info for you there. An archive by date, as well as post labels, and my blogroll also reside in the footer.

I chose the template called Charm, and Linda customized it for me. If you need some tweaking of your blog you might want to get in touch with the blog fairy. :-)  Click her ad below this post to visit her website.

We are doing some minor tweaking at this point...but the walls are finished and the dust has been swept up! I am so pleased that you stopped by to visit.

Meet Linda...

If you have any trouble finding something that was on the blog before just ask me and I will help you find it.

Thanks for visiting!

We are Under Construction

To better serve you...
The blog is under construction for the next few days.
My blog fairy (Linda from Life and Linda) is installing a new template. Yay!

I have had a few issues with things going wonky over the last week, so we decided a new template was in order.

If things look strange or act strangely...
please come back after the dust has been swept up. Otherwise...just walk around the mess. :-) Friends don't mind coming when the house is a mess, right?!

Thank you all for being my loyal friends and readers.

I appreciate you so much.

DIY Tutorial: Make a Collage

Not just for bloggers!

Come one come all and learn how to play with Canva.

I am creating a series of tutorials on how to make several types of graphics. Create baby shower invitations, birthday cards, collages, business cards. The possibilities are endless!

Let's begin.

A few days ago I was showing some of my Canva graphic creations on Instagram, and several of my followers, who are also bloggers, requested that I show how I make some of my digital documents. Canva bills itself as "amazingly simple graphic software." It truly is!  I use the free version, of course. ha!

This collage is an example of a "blog graphic" template. I selected a template and added my own pics and graphics.

A Walk Around the House

Featured on Dishing It and Digging It w/Life and Linda

There is always a lot to do when you have a yard!

We have been trying to grow some grass and keep bushes alive this summer. You too?

Hubby was busy watering every night for about two weeks after our grasses were planted. He certainly did not want to lose them after so much work to get these plantings and bedding finished.

Our house is on a corner and we want to create some privacy screening. It will take a while, but you have to start somewhere, right.

Here is the start! Nothing!

We chose to plant grasses because they grow quickly and don't cost much. At some point we may add some arborvitae out in the yard to help with privacy too. We'll see. That is in the future sometime.

We have rocks in our front planting beds, so hubby wanted to repeat using them on the side of the house. I like the rocks in our woodsy, rustic area. AND...rocks don't float away in heavy rains like mulch. AND, rocks do not have to be replaced every year.

The grasses were staggered in and out instead of in a straight line. Our plan is to let them grow large and thick.

We took the planting bed up behind the brick retaining wall, for additional screening.

Continuing down the side of the house, we added some small boxwood. It will take a while before those babies are very large, but I did not want to pay for extra large ones. I will just wait a couple of years for them to grow. ha!

The holly tree at the corner has been there about three years. We had a horrible freeze the winter of 2015 and I had to prune quite a bit off of the tree. It has come back from the freeze and is growing nicely. There are lots of new shoots, so it must be healthy.

A neighbor is building a house for his daughter on the last lot left in our neighborhood. It is fun to watch the house progress.

I was so sad when we had to remove two small trees, that grew too large. We were worried about roots hurting our basement wall.  The trees were removed, and we added two small arborvitae in their places.

The last few blooms above.

I am working hard keeping my potted flowers going this summer. It has been so hot!

The planters and pots dry out so quickly...despite the rains we have had.

I managed to bring the two hefty concrete planters from our farm. Yes...they were a bear to move according to son and hubby. (They wanted to know if I "really" needed them.)

I have had them so long that they now have a nice aged patina. One has a crack, and I anxiously watch it to make sure it is not getting worse. I just love the traditional Greek key motif and don't know if I could replace them. (Yes, I "really" need them.)

Those black things in the background are racing tires that belong to our son. He brought them back from NC where he went to engine building school several years ago.

Yes...I still have the tires at my house. ha! Just waiting for bachelor boy to have a place of his own for his "toys." His town house does not have a shop or barn for his projects! ha!

One more grass project...we are trying to grow some!!! ha.

We don't have sod out in our neck of the woods. Folks just work with the ground...and our ground is rocky.

We are trying to work on some patches here and there. The patch above is coming along, but the patch below, not so much. ha! We will keep trying though. Hubby needs something to do to keep busy. :-)

This just about wraps up the walk around the house. There is always something to do with a yard...every season.

We are not OCD with our yard, as anyone can tell. But I like it to look nice, or as nice as a yard up in the rocky woods can look.

Thanks for joining me in walking around the house. We'll do it again in the fall when the colors have changed.

By the way...I am participating in a tablescape blog hop. I want to invite you to join in the fun!

My Summer Pillows

A few posts ago I shared my "fluffing" of the great room. Many of you liked the pillows and so I decided to give you a closer look at them.

(I do my blogging in the great room, which means that my laptop and devices are usually laying around somewhere.)

When I bought the pillows I thought that a person could make similar ones by using linen, cotton, or painter's cloth with fabric markers. I think of more creative things to do than I have time for.

Find your favorite poem or quotation and use your fabric marker to make write bits and pieces on your pillow cover. You might even find a ready made pillow cover to draw your designs on. That would be super simple fun!

I am seriously thinking about adding black monograms to these fringed pillows. I love black and tan together!

This wraps up the pillow show for today!

I hope you enjoyed a closer look at my summer pillows in the great room.

Here are some recent posts you may have missed.

By the way... Check us out!
