Back Porch Refresh

I seem to be running behind on projects this summer. ha! Between this and that I have finally power washed the back porch and put down a new outdoor rug.

Outdoor rug from Lowe's
It's funny. I did not start out having turquoise accessories...but one thing led to another over a few summers and I realized that I had several that I could put together to accessorize the porch.

I love the idea of an outdoor living room...so I have tried to make my long slender porch a comfortable place to hang out and catch the breezes that seem to be always blowing on our back porch. Yay! And with our hot, humid summers breezes are most welcome!

My parents gave our son this iron based, marble topped table that he has not taken to his town house yet. I thought I would put it to good use. :-) ha! I believe it came with ice cream parlor style chairs.

I find the table to be just the right height for the army rockers (that son gave to his dad.)

Each blue/turquoise item came from a different location and I gathered them together for a summer look. The large flower pot was a spring purchase from TJ Maxx while the tall candle lantern was about three dollars from a local dollar store a couple of years ago.

I have no remembrance of where the pillows came from. I used them inside at the farm and they found their way outside when the rockers arrived. I need a pillow to sit and rock comfortably. (I have short legs and the chairs have really deep seats.)

I keep a rug under the rockers because our pebble finish concrete porch floor would chew up the wood runners over time.

I had an orange rug under the rockers for about three years and I just did not want to use orange this year. I wanted something neutral...to go with the black furniture.

I use citronella candles when I spend much time on the porch because bugs love me. I buy little ones that I can pop into votive holders.

Next to the rocking chairs we have a round table and chairs. We have had this set for several years and because it has been under cover it is still very nice.

I shampoo the cushions every summer and they have held up nicely. They are a dusty aqua blue that goes with my turquoise and green.

Here is our cozy little porch...and our cozy view. While we live in a neighborhood, our back porch and yard are very private. I like that! I might want to sit on the back porch in my PJs.

My goal was to have the back porch looking nice by the 4th of July. I made it just in time. :-)

Thanks for visiting!

My Kentucky Living

Hello, I'm Sheila and my house is a giant art project! I enjoy creating an environment where my family can feel safe, secure, and loved. We are empty nesters learning to slow down and enjoy life.

  1. The blues are cool colors and they look great on your porch! Red and orange are "hot" colors. But when I see your colors, I relax. They bring serenity. If I were you I'd try to talk your son out of that sweet round table. Looks like an antique to me.

  2. I agree about the table Brenda. I will wait for him to mention it to me ha! The cool colors are working for me, especially against the brick. Sheila

  3. Lovely, Sheila!! Your porch looks very restful. I have a similar rug under my seating area on my deck, by the fire pit. I love it!

    1. Your deck area is so nice! I love your fire pit too.

  4. What a wonderful summer sitting spot! That table is precious! Maybe your son will think it looks great right where it is! *wink*

    Cottage Blessings,

    1. I might get lucky to keep it for the summer. We'll see. He might not notice. Ha!

  5. Love me a rocking chair. Bring back the days when neighbors visited and enjoyed each other's company. Rocking, talking, and sharing the happenings of the day. If I were your neighbor I'd run over to join you on that lovely porch.

    1. Lynn I would want you to come visit and I would offer you tea, lemonade, or a Coke Zero. 😊

  6. Oh, I love your turquoise accents. Just beautiful. And your potted flowers are so pretty and elegant. Everything looks pretty, cozy, and welcoming.

    1. Thank you so much. I just gathered bits and pieces of my turquoise and came up with a matching look. Fun when it works out that way! Going out to shop for things often leaves me empty handed. Ha!

  7. When's tea? Hot or iced, I'm ready. It looks so inviting. LOVE the rug.

    1. Iced tea or spiced ice tea! Your choice. Come on down! Sheila

  8. Rugs are great on porches - to warm things up visually (but not hot to the feet in summer). I know what you mean about the rocker runners. The paint on mine rubs off in no time due to our exposed aggregate covering. I love the look, so I hesitate to cover it with a rug. And, blowing winds are a regular around here. I hate the thought of mildew growing under rugs. Ugh! You probably don't have that issue as far north as you are. Your table is lovely with the rockers. Maybe your son will let you keep it. :-)

    1. Our back porch does not get rain like the front one...so the rug won't get too wet. It is Olefin, so maybe no mold will grow. Ha!

  9. That is a gorgeous porch! Love the colors and the accessories you have chosen. Now all you need is a Golden or two...

  10. Hi Sheila! Oh, your porch looks so lovely and I adore your blues. It really makes it look cozy and cool. We have a couple of rockers like yours but they are white from Cracker Barrel! I love to sit and rock. Your table and chairs are lovely too and just right for a little tea party on the 4th! Thanks for popping in to see me and I would love to see your daughter's dollhouse. One day I'll find me one!
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  11. It looks positively darling!! Have a great 4th!

  12. I love your sweet porch/outdoor living space. That is next on the agenda here now that I am home. It looks like the same carpet I have-but mine is indoor/outdoor. Happy 4th to you! xo Diana

  13. Whenever I see people's porches I get porch envy all over again! Yours looks so very pretty, I love the turquoise accents! Very calming. Have a wonderful 4th!

  14. I love how everything looks! :)

I'd love for you to share this with my Facebook Group for recipes, crafts, tips, and tricks: https://www.facebook.com/groups/pluckyrecipescraftstips/

  15. Beautiful porch Sheila...I so love using turquoise in the summer...so bright and fresh. Looks like you enjoy many hours on that porch enjoying your view.

  16. I love your pretty porch and I love rocking chairs! The aqua accents are nice.
Thanks for sharing this at Cooking and Crafting with J&J!

  17. Your porch looks so lovely. I love blue items too.
Thanks for sharing at Over The Moon Party,

  18. it looks just fabulous...you chose my favorite color, turquoise and it really looks great out there on your Southern porch...I am wondering, have you painted the ceiling of your porch in HAINT BLUE...??? isn't it a Southern law or something...? LOL
