A Quick Little Ditty

I am always moving and mixing things on my tables.

Here is the latest incarnation. :-)

brass candlesticks and blue and white bowl

(real life...mail on the side table)

I picked up this inexpensive burlap table runner at HL, because I like the use of burlap, but I don't have much around my house except for ribbon/bows. My traditional style does not call for much burlap. ha!

I also like to mix opposite elements when I decorate. Dressy with casual. Dressy with Rustic. Expensive with bargains. Etc.

blue and white bowl

I decided to try my Williamsburg brass candlesticks on my burlap runner. And then I added a blue and white porcelain bowl. Ta Da...I like it.

You have heard me say it before...I love using opposite style elements.

What about you?
Do you mix high and low?
Casual and dressy.
Expensive and cheap?
Traditional and rustic? Etc.

Please share with us.

We are all a little "nosy" and love to know what each other is doing in. :-)

Thanks for visiting,

My Kentucky Living
My Kentucky Living

Hello, I'm Sheila and my house is a giant art project! I enjoy creating an environment where my family can feel safe, secure, and loved. We are empty nesters learning to slow down and enjoy life.

  1. Hi! Love the burlap with the blue and white...looks wonderful and fresh. I have a question for you...is there somewhere to shop for blue and white that is reasonable in cost? I have been searching and all that I find are so expensive. Thanks!!!

    1. Diane, I have found my pieces here and there over many years. I have picked up a thing or two at TJ Maxx, as well as Home Goods. Design shops also have but can be pricy depending on the brand. I have seen others find things at antique shops...looking for bargains. Transfer ware can be found on EBay, but you have to be careful. Have you looked in Kirkland's? Maybe some others will contribute to this conversation too. 😊

      Also try Pier One.

    3. And Etsy! https://www.etsy.com/market/blue_transferware/7
      Enjoy browsing. 😊

  2. Love your burlap runner with the brass and blue ceramic bowl. I like to mix things up a little too. But I still adore traditional classic design and decor! I think you gave Diane the best choices for bargains on blue and white ceramic pieces. I have found some pieces on Joss and Main but on sale purchases only..love your blog.

    1. Thank you Sherry. Like you...on sale, and when I see something that really speaks to me. I am really trying to cut back on my accumulating. Ha.

    2. Your mixture of elements, casual with classic, high end with dollar store finds, is what makes your house sing! xoxo

  3. I do believe I do the same as you! When I put my big white lanterns up on the mantel next to the dramatic portrait I was gambling that it would work and I do believe it does. I think that's the fun challenge to decorating is being able to mix different styles and quality of items and have it work.
There is a new issue for July in Architectural Digest with a home that features lots of blue and white and it is wonderful. I know you'd like it. If you go to their website and search the name Paul Amos and it should come up. I'll drop in the link- see if it works. http://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/suzanne-kasler-les-cole-maine-compound

  4. Thanks for all the suggestions! I have blue and red toile dishes...waaay too many, I have to admit...but am looking for large bowls and jugs..just something to decorate with. I have collected the dishes over many years and they are dinner service dishes...I have not been to Kirlands and will check it out next time I am in that area...I did get lost on that Etsy site!! Thanks again... Diane

  5. I love to mix it up, Sheila. I always told my clients, mix the nice with the cheaper and it will work! Love the burlap with the brass and of course, with the blue/white! Pam @ Everyday Living

  6. I just use what I love; I don't intentionally try to use opposite elements or follow any specific rules. My style is traditional and I love crocheted doilies and runners, as well as embroidered runners with crocheted edges. I occasionally use more modern elements, but only if there is a need for them or they have a special provenance.

  7. Your mix of textures and styles is what makes your house sing. xoxo

  8. It's not something I set out to do, but when something is so good with something else elements like era don't carry much weight with me. I like your runner and I think it is perfect with the bowl and candlesticks. It's an 'honest' fabric.

  9. Burlap runners are THE best.....the simpler the better! Your table is beautiful with the bras and transfer ware. I can't give you any hints about blue and white...I've been looking for ONE piece for several weeks with NO success!! I have collected the red and white for years, and just this morning found a box full of Mason's "Vista" in an estate sale.....20$ later, bingo!!
My house is VERY traditional with old pine, antiques, etc., but I find that the burlap runners just are the perfect counterbalance!! I use one on my DR table and a smaller one on the sideboard, and they always look fresh and pretty...just like yours does!

PS: if anyone is looking for the burlap runners, they are REALLY reasonable at Walmart in the wedding section!

  10. Your table looks so pretty with that centerpiece and the burlap! :)
I hope you have a wonderful week.

  11. Love mixing it up too....really more interesting....love the centerpiece on the table!!

  12. very pretty mixed together. love the chairs especially.
