Back Porch Refresh

I seem to be running behind on projects this summer. ha! Between this and that I have finally power washed the back porch and put down a new outdoor rug.

Outdoor rug from Lowe's
It's funny. I did not start out having turquoise accessories...but one thing led to another over a few summers and I realized that I had several that I could put together to accessorize the porch.

Yay Cooper!

Cooper's Passport

I have an update on Cooper, the golden.

For those of you who are new to the blog...Cooper was rescued from the streets of Turkey and came to the United States to get healthy and find a family.

My brother and sister-in-law had lost their two elderly dogs and welcomed Cooper to join their remaining golden, CeeJay.

Time has passed and Cooper just completed his obedience and temperament testing...and passed with flying colors.

I don't know about you...but if I were in the hospital, a nursing home, or just feeling bad, Cooper would make me feel better. He has the softest fur, and the most gentle personality. He is quiet and low key...and will make a great visitor where ever he goes to put a smile on someone's face.

I just had to brag a little about sweet Cooper!

In other news...

I met this lovely lady, Shirley, from Housepitality Designs recently. We, along with our hubbies, met for lunch in Bowling Green KY and had a wonderful time chatting about many topics. They were in Kentucky touring around and made a point to meet us for lunch. It was such fun to meet this sweet lady. She is as nice as you think!

More later...

Porch and Patio Ideas

Mix Traditional and Modern Elements for a Backyard Aesthetic Perfect for Summer Soirees

This is the time of year for outdoor activities and lolling around on the patio or porch. I am always looking for ways to make my long porches look attractive and love to see new ideas. Hubby has even mentioned maybe extending our outdoor space off of the back porch. Hmmm!

See if you see some inspiration that you like.

Summertime is the season for celebrating outdoors. Whether it’s a backyard BBQ, patio picnic or deck dinner party, there are countless opportunities for open-air entertaining. Creating a party perfect porch is often a matter of using accessories and furnishings that are all-weather friendly and comfortable for guests. If you’re looking to spruce up your home’s outdoor oasis, we’ve got tips and tricks for combining modern and traditional elements to create a sensational space brimming with Southern charm.

A simple patio gets an elegant makeover with rustic elements ideal for hosting large parties or family gatherings. A park bench provides unexpected seating options while a wrought iron lounge set is perfect for its relaxed durabilityIron lanterns, a circular serving tray and mini-potted plants add laidback appeal.
An outdoor chimney intensifies the ambiance of a patio that is perfect for long nights of laugher under starry summer skies.

Technology, Photos, & Perfume

I know this sounds like a crazy mix of topics!

I like to share new ideas that I like with you. I have included links and pics in case you are also interested.

This first idea is a long time coming to me, however it may have been out in the technology world for quite a while. ha!
ios thumb drive on amazon
Maybe I live under a rock...but I just saw this jump drive/thumb drive for phones and tablets, Ipads a couple of weeks ago. I think it is great!
This little gadget expands and saves photos from your I phone or I pad. There are others that work for android phones and tablets too.

Before, we had to connect a cord, or wirelessly sync/move photos to our computers, etc.

But, what if you want to save those pics and you are on vacation or a weekend trip without your computer. And, what if you want to have a document with you while you travel? And I like to take pics of my shopping receipts. Soooo many uses!

I do believe I want to buy one of these thumb drives.  And...it seems to me that we can buy a smaller gigabite phone or pad too. Those 32 and 64 gig toys are much more expensive.

These gadgets are made by a gazillion companies so you would have to do your research to see which one you prefer. Each little thumb drive has a tiny plug in for the phone and a larger usb plug to connect with your computer.
examples on amazon
The price point on these little items varies according to how much storage you want. I saw several on amazon...but check with your favorite technology shopping location. Best Buy has lots of tech stuff...but there are lots of online markets too.

Fragrance Tricks...
Juicy Couture, Viva La Juicy
This is my current favorite fragrance. And I want to make the fragrance last as long as possible when wearing it. I ran across these perfume tips on Good Housekeeping that might help me.  (If you want to read more click on the link.)

Moisturize with unscented lotion then spray perfume.
Spray perfume after showering and before dressing.
Rub vaseline on pulse points before applying perfume.
Don't rub your wrists together after applying perfume.
Don't spray alcohol based perfumes directly onto your hair, but rather onto your hairbrush and then brush your hair.

I am going to try these!

A week or so ago I was sick and bored at the same time. ha!  Raise you hand if you know this feeling.

I wanted to be up and around, but my body did not want to participate. So, I tried to entertain myself the best I could.

I picked up my camera and played with snapping pics of things. Mind you, I was sitting in my chair so all of my views came from this position.

I was practicing my focusing technique, which needs work.

My camera has a touch screen that will let me touch an object in the pic to put the focus on that spot. However...I still get some shake and blur.

I still have not purchased a tripod because I keep reading reviews and cannot make a decision. Ho hum.

I used the wicker ball as my focus spot.
I like still life photography...and you can tell by looking at many of my blog pics. I guess all of us develop a signature style at some point.

I just love to take pictures...and share with you, my somewhat captive audience.

I want to be a photographer!

Until then...I will just play one on my blog. :-)

Thanks for visiting!

A Quick Little Ditty

I am always moving and mixing things on my tables.

Here is the latest incarnation. :-)

brass candlesticks and blue and white bowl

(real life...mail on the side table)

I picked up this inexpensive burlap table runner at HL, because I like the use of burlap, but I don't have much around my house except for ribbon/bows. My traditional style does not call for much burlap. ha!

brass candlesticks

I also like to mix opposite elements when I decorate. Dressy with casual. Dressy with Rustic. Expensive with bargains. Etc.

Long May They Wave & Flag Etiquette

This post was featured at Dishing It and Digging It via Life and LindaThank you!

We are approaching another patriotic holiday!

There is no shortage of flags at our house!

I pick up a few news ones every year.

We are very patriotic at our house!

We have ancestors and family who have served in every American/Colonial war since the seventeen hundreds. To us, this flag is special! It is a symbol that represents so much.

I have an ancestor who was the first native born Virginian ever hung...his father being the immigrant to Virginia in 1652. He was involved in Bacon's Rebellion...so yes, he was a patriot. So many did so much for us to become the country we are now.

Hubby was in the army during a very unpopular time, as many of your family members were too.

Any time I can wave our American flag...I do.

How much do you know about our flag...and flag etiquette?

June 14 -- is Flag Day. The day marks the adoption of the American flag by the Continental Congress in the First Flag Resolution of June 14, 1777. The first resolution signified the flag should be "13 stripes alternate red and white: that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation." source

For some flag history and etiquette... click here

Quick list of Flag Etiquette Don'ts:
  • Don't dip the U.S. Flag for any person, flag, or vessel.
  • Don't let the flag touch the ground.
  • Don't fly flag upside down unless there is an emergency.
  • Don't carry the flag flat, or carry things in it.
  • Don't use the flag as clothing.
  • Don't store the flag where it can get dirty.
  • Don't use it as a cover.
  • Don't fasten it or tie it back. Always allow it to fall free.
  • Don't draw on, or otherwise mark the flag.
  • Don't use the flag for decoration. Use bunting with the blue on top, then white, then red.
Flag etiquette
Military.com offers these do's and don'ts associated with honoring and displaying the flag:
When displaying the flag, do the following:
  • Display the U.S. flag from sunrise to sunset on buildings and stationary flagstaffs in the open. If displayed at night the flag should be property illuminated.
  • The U.S. Flag should be placed above all others if multiple flags are on the same staff.
  • When flags are displayed in a row, the U.S. flag goes to the observer's left. Flags of other nations are flown at same height. State and local flags are traditionally flown lower.
  • When used during a marching ceremony or parade with other flags, the U.S. Flag will be to the observer's left.
  • When flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. By "half-staff" is meant lowering the flag to one-half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff.
  • When the flag is displayed over the middle of the street, it should be suspended vertically with the union (blue field of stars) to the north in an east and west street or to the east in a north and south street.
  • When placed on a Podium the flag should be placed on the speaker's right or the staging area. Other flags should be placed to the left.
  • When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall (or other flat surface), the union (blue field of stars) should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, that is, to the observer's left.
Long may they wave!

The Pillow Hop

Welcome to the pillow hop!

I have a thing for pillows...and those of you who drop by on a regular basis already know this. :-)

I have a hard time passing by a great pillow. But I have been restraining myself some the last year or so.

I was looking at some of my photo collection for ideas...and then thought you might like to see some of my pillow collection and how I move them around the house.

The white sofa had a few easy to reach pillows shortly after we moved into the house.

I love my wool needlepoint pillows...though they are tucked away for the season now.

You will see the green silk pillows pop up in another location before we are finished with the post.

A few years ago I picked up the matching animal print pillows. The fabric is a sturdy chenille, and the down inserts make them easy to fluff.

I also love my orange cotton velvet pillows. Down inserts are nice for these lumbar pillows too. I tend to put them in the great room in the fall of the year. But they have been in the parlor as well as the master bedroom too. They hop here and there!

And sometimes I make my own pillows. Here are a few that I made using painter's dropcloths.

The gold pillows are great for the parlor and great room. I picked up the neutral fringe pillows at pier one sometime in the last year or two. They have zipper covers, and I want to add down inserts to improve their comfort.

I was on a blue kick back in the early spring...so I tried my blue pillows in the parlor, and the master.

Then I moved the blue to the master bedroom because I was wanting a fresh mix with blue and green. I still have those in the room now...and will keep the blue until the mood moves me to switch them out.  :-)

I took this ready made white chenille pillow to be monogrammed...and it turned out well. I may have a couple of more monogrammed for the parlor or great room sometime.

And my green silk pillows in the master.

I still have the green and brown pillows...in a closet. When the fall rolls around they may hop back out to be used.

Sometimes I get tired of colors and don't use them until I feel the need for those colors again.

Do you do that too? I hate to get rid of things until I am really sure that my love affair is over. :-)

This pottery barn comforter was the inspiration for bringing my orange pillows into the master. I tried it just for fun. You all know that I love deep colors!

And a pop of fuchsia made the room even more fun.

Yes...I do love my leopard pillows. I don't think hubby was too thrilled with them when I brought home six or seven of them. I believe he is used to my little crazy pops of d├ęcor... since I am so traditional otherwise.

And back to the gold silk pillows...they were a great investment.

The soutache pillows came from Target with a comforter set about seven years ago.

This is how I put together pillows and accessories. I make a "mood board" on the floor to see how colors and textures work together.

Back to the parlor and gold pillows. The blue and gold tones work well together.

I have only purchased on pillow in the last few months...and it is the gold leopard number from TJ Maxx. It adds a bit of pizazz to the solid color ones.

And this is how the parlor pillows look today.

Pillows are one of the easiest ways to change the mood of a room, sofa, or chair. My pillows hop around the house depending on my mood!

And I freely admit...I am a pillow hoarder! ha!
