I Changed My Mind

They say it's a woman's prerogative,  to change her mind. And I did! Take a look at my latest move.

I shared with you here that I got a new rug from Rug Studio using a coupon they gave me. I had it in the entry when it first arrived. But then I started thinking. Thinking usually causes me to put my back and muscles into action. ha!

I rolled up the rug and took it to the great room. I was wanting to lighten up the things in here and thought that this taupe flatweave might do the trick.

A Red, White, and Blue Table Setting

I have been working on a patriotic table setting for this memorial weekend.

I do not normally have a collection of red, white, and blue since I do not have those colors in my house…but I started thinking a little harder and remembered that I have red placemats for Christmas, white everyday plates, blue and white Spode plates, and navy napkins that go with my formal china.

OK, I can do this. I started playing house to see what the best combination of my bits and pieces would be. I decided on the Spode plates. Take a look at how I will set the table for our family lunch.

Normally for outside use I would use a melamine plate or a toss away plate, but this time I thought I would go with a china plate. The glass looks like crystal, but it is actually a heavyweight plastic cup. (found them at Wal Mart)

I have been collecting silver looking serveware for several years. Actually it is polished aluminum that can go from freezer to oven. This particular piece is sized so that you can put a hot Pyrex into it…and place on the table. I have also put this piece in the freezer for a while and then served sandwiches in it. I have trays, bowls, etc.

My silver usually just stays in the cabinet…as this “alternative metal” is so easy to use…and it never needs polishing.

I will show you some other pieces another time. Some are Wilton, some are Lenox, and some are Beatrix Ball. If you have not yet discovered this type of metal….look around on the internet. There are beautiful pieces.

Please let me know what you are doing to decorate for your memorial weekend festivities.
Thanks so much for visiting me today!

Our Family Brownie Recipe

The Family Brownie Recipe

Beware: Not healthy, but so good!

Featured on Rattlebridge Farm a Foodie Friday.

Here is a recipe that has been a favorite in our family since the early days...as in back in the mid seventies.

My mother-in-law first made these, and since then have been a family favorite. They have been birthday cake requests. They have been Christmas buffet regulars.

I shared this recipe with a cousin...and then the it branched out to her nieces and probably her daughter by now.

My daughter has always loved to cook since she was a young girl...and she soon took up making these brownies too.

In my opinion the only tricky thing is making the icing. Any time you work with chocolate and sugar you have to be careful not to have crystals on the side of the pan infect the chocolate and make it grainy.

Campfire Potatoes in the Oven

As we as we approach a long weekend I want to re-share one of my family favorite potato recipes. It can be made on a grill or in an oven. Very little cleanup. Easy to take to someone's house, etc.
Bon App├ętit!

Campfire Potatoes in the Oven
I have a recipe conversion for you.  I seem to always take recipes and tinker with them to suit my taste. This is an oven version of the very yummy campfire potatoes that you can cook over a hot fire in an aluminum packet.

My "Oven Baked" Campfire Potatoes

Ingredients
6 or 7 large baking potatoes, sliced thinly
2 large onions, sliced thinly
1/2 cup olive oil, drizzled over all
Salt to taste

Drizzle with olive oil after mixing the potatoes and onions.

With my version I preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

This recipe makes enough for a 9 x 13 inch casserole. You may increase or decrease ingredients depending on your needs.

New Rugs for the Entry

As I tend to do, I have been moving and mixing things around the house. No surprise! And one thing leads to another of course. I moved a red oriental wool rug from the entry to another location in the house.

That left me with needing another rug for my front entry. I did not want to purchase an expensive rug since this is where people step in from outside.

I was given an opportunity to partner with Rug Studio and used a coupon to order a new rug. I spent a weekend looking at the many selections online and decided to go with this taupe Greek key motif wool flatweave rug.

I ordered it on a Sunday evening and it was delivered 8 days later. The rug was just unrolled when I took these pics...therefore a few ripples.

I know it seems like I might have been taking a chance by ordering a rug online. But no! The ordering process was simple!

The color of the rug is taupe and ivory, though the online description called it brown.

I was keeping my fingers crossed that it would be a taupe color...and bingo, it was! Whew. It will work in four different locations in my house. Yay!

I also ordered a pad to keep my 5 x 8 rug from slipping. Safety is important of course. I like flatweave rugs because you can flip them over and get twice the wear. I have an older one that we used in our sun room at the previous house.

Here is another view with more light. Both of my wool orientals on either side of this rug (in the parlor and dining room) have shades of taupe and tan.

I love the classic Greek key motif...and want to look for more Greek key accessories.

I also saw this cute all weather bistro rug on rugstudio.com also and added it to my cart before checking out. It can be hosed off as well vacuumed. I may put this mat in my kitchen in front of the sink because it is thick and squishy!

It has a cotton backing and will not scratch my hardwood floors.

It was so easy to order my rugs online. I could have called for support, but I found the online process so easy that there was no need. There were instructions on how to return my rugs if they did not suit me...which is always comforting when making online purchases.

If you are in the market for any new area rugs give Rug Studio a look. There are traditional wool orientals as well as fun outdoor deck and patio rugs. The only hard thing for me was deciding which rug to buy. There are so many choices!

Disclosure: While Rug Studio provided these two rugs all opinions are my own. You may read my disclosure page here.

I will show more pictures later as I place them in different locations around the house. I was excited to share/show you my new arrivals.

Thanks for visiting!

Let's Talk Fashion Today

When the new season's fashion catalogs arrive in my inbox or mailbox I start scanning them to see what I already own and can restyle to this season's new look.

From black slacks, skirts, and dresses to shorts and jeans surely I can have a new wardrobe by just shopping my own closet. ha!

I am a "pack rat"...and keep my clothes forever! That gives me lots of mix and match options over time. Take a look.
(This post was featured at Marilyn's Treats.)

source, chicos.com
This outfit is from Chicos. I have almost the same exact pieces, except that my jeans do not have rips. But I have a similar green sweater, and a similar necklace. I do own the Chicos wonderful no iron 3/4 sleeve white blouse. Ta Da! New outfit at no cost. ha.

I am doing the same thing with my clothing that I do with my house and accessories. I scan online catalogs, blogs, and pinterest to see what I can create using what I already own. I just look for new ways to mix and match accessories, etc.

source, Chicos.com
I can come close to putting together this look also. Jeans, straw hat, gold tone jewelry, and a neutral blazer. How about you? I bet you have similar items in your closet too.

Jeans and a black button up blouse and gold jewelry. Check! Another snazzy outfit. I am still a jeans girl and will be till I die most likely. ha!

How many of you are happy that gold jewelry is back in style? Me. Me. Me.

source, Chicos.com

I have dark crops and a large print sweater. While this outfit uses a jacket, I believe I could get the same look with belting my printed sweater. Again, a new outfit with no spending because I have similar pieces. I love to see ideas for using clothing pieces that I already own.

Another cool look. Jeans. Tank. Straw hat. Scarf. Neutral jacket.

source, Chicos.com

Always classic, a white blouse and black pencil skirt with black pumps. I am guessing many of you have these pieces too.

source, Chicos.com

Black shorts...YES! I love the knee length short because my short legs don't look great anymore.

I wear a lot of black in my wardrobe, no matter the season. However, I did order two items in ultramarine blue from Talbots when they were having their friends and family sale: A tee shirt and The Perfect Crop.

Being short I have to shop places that carry some petite sizes, and Talbots does. (I am not affiliated with Talbots, except for being a customer.)
Talbots.com, Ultramarine Blue Tee

Talbots.com, Ultramarine Blue The Perfect Crop

Talbots' The Perfect Crop, Curvy is my favorite summer pant. I buy the curvy fit and find that since I carry my weight in my hips and thighs the curvy fit is perfect. (I am so tired of trying to squeeze my curves into straight pants.)

I bought a couple of perfect crops last year and want to add to my collection this year. You know how it is when you find something that fits really, really well! Multiples, yes!

On another topic... Good Reads

While I was on Chicos.com I clicked over to read their blog and found a Spring Reading List... The titles look interesting in case you are looking for some new reading material.

Now, I need to go do some work in my closet and drawers to put together some new combinations/outfits!

Thanks for visiting!

Still Singing the Blues

I am still stalking inspiration images for incorporating blue into my house. I am always looking for ideas...ha! And since so many of you love to see great images of traditional design I am sharing! ...Enjoy!

In the living room...
Splashy blue and white chairs are the feature, with blue being repeated around the room in Chinoiserie pieces.

Today's images are from a Traditional Home feature of Dennis Basso's home in the Hamptons. Each room uses blue. Some more and some less.

Gorgeous secretary!
I have a secretary like this on my wish list!
Maybe Santa will read my blog and make a note.

The dining room...

This beach house has a great mix of elegant and casual. Note the elegant lighting and the casual shiplap. For me, opposites often attract.

Polished silver always adds elegance to any room! You cannot go wrong with displaying your silver, whether it is a single piece or a full tea service.

I saved this picture mostly because I need some built in book shelves, and I like the way these are trimmed out.

I used to tear pictures out of magazines, and now I save digital pics in a file. ha!

There are so many things that I love in this picture! The natural rug, the gorgeous wood table, and the oversized Chinoiserie pieces. And look at the window treatment fabric in the back of the pic...Chinoiserie!  And...Who is ready to incorporate brass fixtures again?

A bedroom...

I am hesitant to paint my walls blue, so I am also looking at using a neutral on walls and bringing in blue in accessories. The article says that this room has grass cloth wallpaper. I love grass cloth, but I am not sure that I am ready to go down the wallpaper path again. (How about you all?)

The roman shades on the French doors repeat the natural wall color. It's the details like this that make a room look so pulled together.

The kitchen...

This white kitchen makes me think about painting my yellow kitchen walls  all white. While this kitchen is very traditional, it is so fresh, so au courrant.

I love the square light fixtures above the island. The shape repeats the black tiles on the floor. I love to study pictures to see all of the details.

There is less blue in the kitchen, but what is there ties in to the blue Chinoiserie around the house.

A bathroom...

I left a tub similar to this in the house we built.
I really miss it! There is not a lot of blue in the bathroom, except for a tray on the vanity.

On the back porch...

The blue and white color scheme was carried out to the back porch also. Just gorgeous.

Thank you to Traditional Home magazine for permission to use their beautiful images.

Now, you can think and dream about which design idea you would like to incorporate into your house.

For me...it is painting my yellow kitchen walls white, and then adding in a few of my Chinoiserie pieces. What do you all think about my painting my yellow kitchen walls white? (I have the white cabinets and black counter tops already.)

I also really, really like the use of neutral, natural fiber rugs.

Do you see an idea that you would like to use in your house?

Thanks for visiting!
